THE Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) president, Mrs. Miria Obote, has reshuffled the top party leaders.

The move is reportedly aimed at preparing the party for a smooth delegates conference in October during which new leaders will be elected.

Peter Walubiri, who has been the secretary general has been dropped and replaced by Chris Opoka, his deputy.

Chwa MP John Okello-Okello was sacked as vice-president, while Badru Wegulo, the party chairman, now becomes vice-chairperson.

The new chairperson is Yona Kanyomozi of the East African Legislative Assembly.

The reshuffle comes after some UPC leaders travelled to Nairobi, Kenya where they held a meeting with former UN diplomat Olara Otunnu who they want to front for the 2011 presidential elections.

Mrs. Obote also appointed her son, Jimmy Akena, who is also the Lira Municipality MP, as the vice-chairman, replacing Chris Opio, who has been appointed a director at the Milton Obote Foundation.

Other appointees include Omongole Angura (assistant secretary general), Ivan Rwakabbogo (assistant treasurer) and Joseph Damulira (assistant national youth leader).
