THE assistant resident district commissioner for Kampala, Ruth Kirabira, has stopped the fresh registration of St. Balikuddembe Market vendors.

Kirabira’s directive contradicts an earlier one by local government minister Adolf Mwesige. “From now onwards, no one should continue to register the vendors,” Kirabira said during a meeting at Nakivubo Blue Primary School recently.

She said her decision was based on security reasons. Rivalling groups of the former Owino Market recently met Mwesige over leasing the market from the Kampala City Council.

He advised them to merge into one company and conduct fresh registration of the vendors in the market. However, most of the vendors opposed the idea, saying non-members would be smuggled in.

Mwesige’s intervention followed an order from the President after the vendors petitioned him.
