KASESE district lacks doctors and other health workers. The district secretary for health, Rehema Muhindo, said 66% of health facilities in the district lacked staff.

Muhindo was presenting a report about anomalies in the district health department recently.

She said the ratio of doctors to patients was 1:40,000 and that of nurses to patients was 1:2000.

“Out of the 1638 approved posts in the health department, only 500 are filled,” Muhindo added.

She said some doctors left for further studies without the approval of their supervisors.

Muhindo said about sh5b was needed to recruit staff, adding that funding from the Government was not enough. Some district councillors said civil servants worked in private health centres.

They said with limited personnel, nurses and doctors on the Government payroll should only be deployed in public health centres.

In a related development, about sh62m is needed to make the solar system functional at Bwera Hospital, which is the only government-aided hospital in the district.

The secretary for works and natural resources, Selevano Mulhondi, said out of the 112 solar panels installed at the hospital, only eight were functional. He said 10 penals had been stolen from the hospital.

Mulhondi added that the amount quoted would buy batteries to operate the system at the hospital.
