MBALE Hospital has received sh1.5b from the Government for renovation and buying of equipment. Sh522m will be used to renovate wards and the intensive care unit, the principal hospital administrator, David Otori, said.

Otori noted that the sewerage system, water pipes, roofs, ceiling boards and the electrical system needed repair.
He said they had started carrying out repairs and expected to complete them in October.

“Some of the buildings have never been renovated since the 1950s,” Otori observed recently. He said sh600m would be used to buy furniture, computers and equipment.

Otori added that sh339m would be used to build a fence, tarmac the roads and build stands for patients’ attendants.
He said the hospital was putting in place measures to limit the number of patient attendants.

“Patients need clean well-maintained hospitals to prevent them from contracting more diseases,” Otori noted.

He explained that the hospital takes care of 500 to 1,000 in-patients and about 400 out-patients daily, with the doctor-patient ratio of 1:50.
