Democratic Party president John Ssebaana Kizito has supported the move by the NRM to banish Independent candidates.
“Party members who chose to contest as Independents are indisciplined.â€
He noted that DP members who contest as Independents were weakening the party and its flag bearers during elections.
Ssebaana made the remarks in an interview with The New Vision in Masaka district recently.
He urged DP members to abide by the party constitution.
“We have over 30 registered parties. Independent candidates should join them instead of creating confusion within our party.†Ssebaana said he wants competent leaders to head the party.
“I will not anoint any successor. I want competent leaders who have gone through proper election in accordance with the party constitution.â€
The central executive committee of the NRM recently adopted a proposal to amend the party’s constitution to enable members to elect flag-bearers in the 2011 general elections.
Ssebaana also advised wrangling DP leaders in Masaka to settle their disputes through the party structures.
“I do not want to hear party disputes at ceremonies.â€
On the delay by the party to hold the delegates conference, Ssebaana explained that they want to guard against fake delegates in the forum.
“We know of delegates who stay in Kampala and they always claim to be coming from the eastern region. We do not want that to happen again.â€
He added that the party aims at empowering its leaders in rural areas to take decisions without waiting for national interventions.
