WITH DR. GLORIA NDAGIRE

Dear Doctor,

I have a problem with my knees, especially when I am climbing steps. Sometimes I feel the bones crack.

A friend of mine advised me to use seven seas tablets. The tablets are expensive and not readily available in pharmacies. I have now resorted to eating silver fish (mukene) daily. Will this help to lubricate my joints?
- EKK

Dear EKK,

Noisy knees may be embarrassing but most of that noise is harmless. There may be some noise from perfectly healthy joints.

However, the noise may result from gradual wearing down of the cartilage that cushions the knee joint.

This usually comes with age. Noise accompanied by pain, swelling and stiffness may be a sign of damage to the joint secondary to overuse or injury. Individuals whose close family members have a history of joint problems are also more likely to develop them.

It is also about 2.5 times more common in women. Excessive weight gain may also put pressure on the knee.

Seven seas is rich in fatty acids that keep the joints healthy. These, however, can also be found in cold water fish and nuts.

Sometimes the noise may be an early sign of inflammation within the joint or damage to one of the structures in the joint.

You may need to see a doctor if you develop pain or swelling.

Well-planned exercises may also be useful as these improve the muscle tone and knee function. Avoid smoking.
