WEST Nile Golf Club’s Yassin Boy edged Kenyan James Anyonyi in a tense sudden death play-off to win the Tororo Open on Sunday.

Both Anyonyi and Boy finished the 36-hole contest with 153 strokes, having scored uniform scores in both rounds.

The 26-year-old Boy drew wild cheers on the second hole of the playoff when he sunk a 20-foot birdie on a par-3 to beat the vastly experienced Anyonyi. Boy claimed his maiden victory in the Uganda Golf Union stroke-play championship.

Boy and Anyonyi dislodged day one leader Fred Wanzala to force a playoff in the event that had the entire field ‘curse’ the dry greens.

Emma Opio and Wanzala shared third spot, two shots off the pace in the Tororo Cement sponsored tournament. Over 100 golfers from Kenya and Uganda took part.

“The course was good but the greens were so dry and they spoilt my game,” Opio said.

Julius Oyange (157) and Tororo’s Anthony Olowo (158) were fourth and fifth respectively. National champion Vincent Byamukama had a dismal outing, finishing out of the championship points - down in 10th place.

In the sh3m professional event, Deo Akope was in top form, firing 142 to beat second placed Mande by four shots. Kenyan Dismas Ndiza settled for third spot, seven strokes off the pace while Dickson Lagoro and Denis Anguyo tied in fourth position with 156 apiece.
