THE rival Mufti, Sheikh Zubair Kayongo, has said he has the backing of some government officials. “We also have big shots to whom we report. You only have to inform us early enough when there is a problem so that we forward the matters to the relevant offices,†he said during Juma prayers in Luweero district.
Kayongo’s supporters forced their way into the premises despite the heavy deployment of Police officers who had cordoned off the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council branch headquarters in Luweero town.
Kayongo, who also presided over a fundraising for the completion of a mosque, amused the crowd when he said the resident district commissioner, Geoffrey Kyomukama, had saved his job by allowing the function to proceed.
Kyomukama had earlier tried to block the function. Kayongo, who travelled in a convoy, was accompanied by MPs Latif Sebaggala, Ali Ndawula and Mawiya Lule.
They contributed sh600,000 towards the mosque project. “Kyomukama is now in the good books because our people in Kampala will be briefed about his cooperation,†he said.
The LC5 chairperson, Ronald Ndawula, also rebuked Kyomukama, saying he was interfering in Muslim affairs.
However, Kyomukama, who was invited to speak, said he was only doing his job. He contributed sh200,000 to the project.
“Who am I to chase you away?†We were only trying to ensure security,†Kyomukama said in an apologetic tone that moved the charged supporters who shouted: “You have talked sense.â€
