VINCENT Baguma, the prime suspect in the death of Tom Jjulunga, will face charges of attempted robbery, the Police said yesterday.

“Jjulunga died during the shoot-out with our officers in Kawempe,” said Police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba.

“Our investigations revealed that Baguma was involved in an attempted robbery in Kawempe,” she said in an interview after the weekly Police briefing at the Kampala Central Police Station.

She said Baguma was being held at the Rapid Response Unit headquarters in Kireka, a Kampala suburb.

Baguma who turned himself in to the Police last week, denied having a hand in the death of Jjulunga.
He, however, told the Police that Jjulunga was his accomplice in many city robberies.

If convicted, Baguma faces between three to seven years in jail.
Jjulunga, a popular voice on various talk-shows dubbed ‘ebimeza’, died at Mulago Hospital.

The Police surgeon in a post-mortem report attributed his death to “two bullet wounds”. A colleague with whom he was travelling on the fateful day, identified as Wasswa, died on the spot. His body was dumped in Busega, another Kampala suburb.

The Police said the officers involved in the shoot-out had identified the car allegedly used by Jjulunga and Baguma.

The Kawempe Police chief declined to reveal the names of the officers who recorded the statement describing the case as “very sensitive”.

According to records at Kawempe Police station, Jjulunga, a resident of Bwaise in Kampala was wanted for robbery and theft.

Jjulunga was wanted for office-breaking, theft and burglary by the Nabweru Magistrate’s Court that issued his arrest warrant on August 1, 2005 after he jumped bail.
