ONE of the founders of the Uganda Peoples Congress, Adoko Nekyon, has defended party president Miria Obote’s cabinet reshuffle, saying she was acting within the party constitution.

Nekyon, also a national delegate, said reshuffles were part of growing organisations.

“Cabinet posts are not permanent jobs. The person reshuffling does not even need to explain why they are dropping you. It is only the appointing authority who knows the reasons,” he said.

“She can say she was bringing in fresh blood. There are thousands of members who have never held any posts but qualify. Why are they not fighting to get into the cabinet?” he asked.

Nekyon was reacting to a story that 200 delegates had signed a petition demanding Miria’s removal from office.

The delegates accuse Miria of ignoring their request to convene the national council to vet her new appointments.

The petitioners include Patrick Rubaihayo, MPs Okello Okello (Chua), Isha Otto (Oyam), Simon Ross Euku (Kalaki), and Willy Anokbonggo (Kwania).

Nekyon denied allegations that he, Miria and her son, Jimmy Akena wanted to take charge of the Milton Obote Foundation properties.

“I have never applied to become a member of the foundation. There is no way I can be on the board of governors when I am not a member. Let the petitioners invent other lies,” he said.

Nekyon urged critics and the media to stop referring to him as a member of the Obote family, saying he was the head of the Adoko Nekyon family, which is bigger than Obote’s.
