The interdicted Jinja mayor has been granted bail by the Kampala High Court.
Mohammed Kezaala was on Wednesday released on a non-cash bail of sh10m and directed to report to the court every second day of the month.
His sureties, Mariam Nsangi, Samuel Kitanda and Epaphras Kabududho, were also ordered to execute a non cash bond of sh10m.
Earlier, on June 29, Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate Vincent Mugabo had remanded Kezaala, after committing him to High Court Anti-Corruption division to face trial. The trial date is yet to be fixed.
Hassan Walusimbi, the principal state attorney from the Inspectorate of Government, had opposed the bail application, saying Kezaala should make a fresh application.
Caleb Alaka, who represented Kezaala, however, objected saying Kezaala had never absconded his bail ever since he was charged.
Kezaala is accused of allegedly approving sh16.7m for the purchase of 100 pieces of iron sheets and 820 bags of cement, using money meant for village councils.
Prosecution also alleged that the mayor caused financial loss when he directed payment of sh16.7m to Green Summer Enterprise without informing the municipal council between July 2006 and April 2008.
Before Kezaala was charged, the Inspector General of Government issued a report recommending that he should be removed from office for breach of the Leadership Code.
