SIX pupils of Damatira Primary School in Balla sub-county, Apac district, sustained injuries after a storm blew away the roofs of their classrooms, writes Alex Ocen.

The Thursday afternoon storm also razed seven semi-permanent teachers’ houses, including that of the head teacher and two churches belonging to the Catholic and the Church of Uganda.

The head teacher, Remis Ogwang Ayo, said text books and other scholastic materials kept in the staffroom, the head teacher’s and his deputy’s offices were also destroyed. They were estimated at sh16m.

The injured pupils included Flavia Akidi and Mary Acen of P.6, Emmy Okello and Tommy Odongo, both of P.5, Scovia Apili and Patrick Omara, both of P.3.

“The fate of 1,177 pupils of the school still hangs in balance as some teachers left the school due to lack of accommodation. We have only five classrooms left and these are not enough for effective learning,” Ogwang said.
