THIEVES broke into the Uganda Leaf Tobacco offices in Kibaale town, Kibaale district and took off with about sh58m on Saturday night, reports Ismael Kasooha.

The Police on Monday recovered a gun and a broken money safe a few meters away from the offices. The district criminal investigations directorate officer, Michael Ogwal, said the money had been withdrawn from Stanbic Bank, Bwamiramira branch on Friday at 4:00pm.

Ogwal said at the time of the incident, the offices were being guarded by Eliot Musinguzi and Wilson Mugisha, both from Delta Force, a private security company.

“The duo is reported to be on the run but the Police has managed to recover a pair of uniform and 10 bullets,” Ogwal said.

He said an accountant of the company, Edison Kaganda, 41, responsible for withdraws and banking, has been arrested to help the Police with investigations.

“We are puzzled as to why the accountant withdrew money on a Friday evening yet it was meant to be paid out on Monday. We suspect this could have been a planned job,” Ogwal said.

The company is currently purchasing tobacco from farmers in the district.
