OVER 30,000 residents of Kagugube parish in Kampala central division have received water and sanitation facilities worth sh1.7b. The programme, implemented by National Water and Sewerage Corporation, provided 30 pit-latrines and 100 prepaid water metres to slum areas in the city.

The three-year pilot project was funded by the African Water Facility through the African Development Bank. Silver Ssewanyana, an official of Winsor, the consultants, said the parish had suffered water disconnection and had poor toilet facilities, which put the people at risk of waterborne diseases like cholera.

“There are about 15,000 permanent residents in the parish. The number, however, doubles when you consider other people who work in the area during the day,” noted Ssewanyana.

Joseph Ssuuna, another consultant, disclosed that the project would be rolled out to the other 35 informal settlements in Kampala.

“Sanitation is a major challenge to the informal sector. Addressing it will improve the standards of living. Ndeeba and Kisenyi parishes are our next targets when we get more funding,” Ssuuna said.

He explained that the residents would fetch the water free of charge for a while, but later pay sh15 for a 20-litre jerrycan.

He said the residents would later also pay some fees for using the toilets.
