It is every woman’s dream; the day she walks down the aisle to meet the man she is going to spend the rest of her life with.

All her life, she has dreamed of this day. Her father walking her down the aisle, the handsome groom waiting at the altar to take her hand, the beautiful white gown and enchanting veil, the reception etc, every detail has been worked out.

Over the years, weddings have gained a certain monotony that is getting absurd: From the place of worship, taking pictures in gardens or a photo studio to a reception at a hotel or gardens.

One reception is no different from another; endless speeches, food, soda, beer, cutting of cake and dancing. The only difference is the couples and the major guests. Not forgetting the meetings; the wedding tradition is becoming tedious and expensive not only for the couple, but also for the friends and family.

But with a little creativity and great sensibility, some couples have dared to be different and have made a day designed to suit their needs and pockets. To make their day far from ordinary couples try new ideas and in recent years, weddings have taken on a new face.

Can you afford to throw a lavish party? Do you want something intimate and well thought out? Do you have to dedicate a whole day to the event or can four hours suffice? Some couples have decided to take a different route and achieved a beautiful ceremony that does not follow the norm.

The average wedding costs about sh14m and for the more upmarket affair, the cost goes up to sh40m, but there are some couples that have had lavish over the top weddings costing over sh100m. Who can forget Pastor Kiweweesi’s sh300m wedding in 2007 which had everyone talking or Amama Mbabazi’s son, whose wedding at Serena Hotel brought together more ministers and MPs than a Parliamentary session.

Some of these big weddings have over 1,000 guests, three course meals, huge buffets, etc. These get more lavish every year and for as long as ministers’ children continue to marry, we shall continue to see these over the top weddings.
