UGANDA recovered from a false start at the hands of Ghana, to whitewash Kenya in the Africa junior badminton championships team event that started yesterday in Addis Ababa.

Norman Katende reports that despite Shamim Bangi winning her singles, Herbert Ebayo and Daisy Nakalyango taking their mixed doubles, Ugandans were shocked by the West Africans in the men’s singles and doubles; and in the mixed doubles.

The Housing Finance Bank sponsored team however recovered in the afternoon to beat neighbours Kenya.

Uganda now has to beat South Africa and Botswana to finish among the top two in Group A, and advance to the semi-finals.

“The situation is tricky but good performance in the team event will give us more morale,” said national badminton chief executive officer Simon Mugabi.
