EDITOR—On August 6, The New Vision published a story entitled “Opposition discusses joint candidate”. It was reported that UPC, FDC, CP and JEEMA held a meeting at Paradise Hotel in Jinja.

The article does not mention the people representing their parties in the so-called Inter–Party Co-operation (IPC). It should be noted that members of the National Council of the Uganda Peoples Congress on April 25 rejected UPC from joining the IPC.

The rejection nullified any protocol previously signed by the UPC cabinet to join the IPC.

The cabinet’s action then contradicted the constitutional spirit of UPC. Without securing the consent of the National Council and Annual Delegates Conference, the cabinet took UPC to join the IPC.

So, whoever, claims to represent UPC in any IPC meetings does so illegally, and for his/her personal and private cause.

The article discusses Kiiza Besigye or Olara Otunnu to be fronted for a joint opposition candidate in 2011.

In the article, Otunnu’s position is not clear. Do the writers of this article discuss him as an FDC or UPC member? If in the minds of the writers, Olara Otunnu is supposed to represent UPC then I wish to make it clear to all your readers.

Otunnu ceased to be a member of UPC when he participated in overthrowing the democratically elected UPC government. In the eyes of UPC he committed treason.

Unforgivable atrocities were visited on many innocent Acholi, Langi, Kumam, Iteso and others who perished during the administration of the military junta of the Okellos in which Otunnu himself served.

At this time when we are trying hard to reorganise UPC we hear an angel of death in the person of Olara Otunnu announcing his desire to contest for the presidency of UPC!

Give us a break, UPC does not lack leaders. Otunnu can be forgiven but he should forget the presidency of UPC
