RUGBY Cranes coach Yayiro Kasasa is grappling with an injury bug in his squad that faces Kenya in the first leg of the Elgon Cup in Nairobi Saturday.

Kasasa, who has just three days to prepare for the engagement, will have to do without stand-in captain Moses Soita who is out with a back injury. Soita had taken over from John Musoke who broke a jaw in the World Cup qualifier against Tunisia in June.

Bishop Onen, Brian Odongo, Paul Kabazi and Mathias Ochwo suffered knocks in the Super 8 League on Saturday and are undergoing physiotherapy.

Kasasa said Heathens’ Ochwo would wear the captain’s arm-band.

“The injuries are worrying but we have nothing to do. Soita will probably play in the return leg but those on physiotherapy will most likely be fit for the game,” Kasasa stated.

Uganda lost the previous two editions of the competition to Kenya.

Government has meanwhile, bailed out the team that departs tomorrow with sh5m. The rugby union URU was in a financial crisis following the withdrawal of East African Breweries who were the sponsors of the event. The union had to find funds, at short notice, to transport and accommodate the team in Kenya.

“I received confirmation from sports commissioner Dan Tamwesigire that government has offered us sh5m,” URU boss William Blick said.

* Uganda demolished Morocco 22-0 in the bowl final of the CAR U-19 tournament, that ended prematurely after the North Africans walked off the field claiming poor officiation by a Zambian referee 15 minutes to the final whistle.
