TUMUSIIME Mutebile, the central bank governor, has urged the East African Institute of Bankers to come up with measures that will protect the financial institutions and improve service delivery.

“We should utilise the lessons learnt from the global crisis to stabilise our financial institutions and improve financial services across the region,” said Mutebile.

This was in a speech read by Patrick Kaberenge, the central bank’s acting deputy governor, at the opening of the ninth East African Banking School conference at Hotel Africana in Kampala on Monday.

He said there was need for supervision consolidation with the growing markets across borders because banks are spreading beyond boundaries.

The governor also told participants from across the region to address the issue of professional staff recruitment.

“Regulation and supervision procedures should be strengthened to allow for more participation with the cross-border trade activities,” he said.

Mutebile called for more capitalisation maintenance in the banks to suit the economic situation.
