The youth in the Obusinga (kingdom) bwa Rwenzururu have been commissioned to lead a crusade for peace, unity, reconciliation and development in the region.

“I light this candle to commission you to lead the crusade for peace, unity, reconciliation and development in the Rwenzori region and even beyond,” the king of the Bakonzo and Bamba, Charles Wesley Mumbere, stated on Saturday.

He was closing a one-day youth symposium at the Diocese of Kasese Social Services Hall in Kasese town. Youth representatives from Kasese district attended the meeting.

The Omusinga told the youth that tribalism had prevented Ugandans from choosing a national language. Each tribe wants its own dialect to be the national language, he said.

“If people in Uganda were to be sincere, Luganda, which is widely spoken, should have qualified as the national language,” he noted.

He advised the youth to guard against preventable diseases, especially HIV/AIDS and to grow into peace-loving and morally upright citizens.

The symposium, the third since 2007, was organised by Kasese woman MP Winnie Kiiza Bihande.

The MP said: “I am in Parliament as a strong FDC. But I hate the attitude that when you belong to different political parties, you become enemies. So I want to show and teach the youth that even when they belong to different political parties, religions and ethnicity, they must still work together for development.”

She said the Government should increase funding to sports in order to unite the youth and reduce their redundancy, which easily breeds evil behaviour.
