Dominant Western region reckon they will easily capture a record 14th title in the Inter-regional golf tournament that tees off at Uganda Golf Club today.

Western captain Edwin Tumusiime whose team has won the previous three titles is optimistic his array of youthful players will deliver victory.

“Many of the people in my team are low handicap players so the match-play system is favourable to us. We have good players who are used to such highly competitive golf. I am looking forward to a good performance. As usual we want nothing short of victory,” Tumusiime stated.

The Western captain pointed out Northern as the region to beat in the two-day match-play competition sponsored by Tusker Malt Lager and Kampala Casino.

“Like us, Northern have some national team players but we definitely have an edge. It’s bound to be an interesting competition this year,” Tumusiime remarked.

Lawrence Muhenda, Fred Wanzala, Titus Okwong, Frank Mugisa and Joel Bantu among others are expected to feature prominently for Western.

Northern has drafted in West Nile Club’s Boy Yasin and Bob Hunter and hope to turn tables this time. The Onito brothers, Emma Opio and Grace Ocici who switched from Western, will also boost the team.

“We are more organized this year and have good players as well. We have what it takes to break the dominance of Western,” team captain John Waigo stated.

Eastern led by the chatty Johnson Omollo and Buganda that is this time headed by Robert Mukasa, will be out to end a long winless spell.
