Ugandan golfers eyeing EA Challenge crown

SPIRITS are high in Uganda’s camp ahead of today's East Africa golf challenge at the par 71 Entebbe club course.

“We have a winning strategy, and I can assure Ugandans it will work," coach Amos Kamya confidently said after the team's final practice round yesterday.

“Our biggest challenge will come from Kenya and Rwanda but we are not scared of them,” stated player Ian Odokonyero.

Kenya is a dominant force in the annual event with eight titles.

Uganda is looking for a second win after the 2001 triumph in Kampala.

The three day tournament tees off at the 18-hole lakeside course this morning, with entries from hosts Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi.

Odokonyero will team up with Emmanuel Opio, Vincent Byamukama, Fred Wanzala, Said Mawa, Silver Opio, Brian Mwesigwa and Uganda Open champion Peter Ssendaula.
Uganda has hosted the annual competition twice.

All teams had a practice round yesterday before a team managers' meeting, flag raising ceremony and welcome dinner.

The Royal and Ancient, an international golf body, has contributed $6000 (sh20.8m) towards the annual competition.
