THE POLICE in Luweero have mounted a search for 10 prisoners who escaped from Butuntumula prison on Wednesday morning.

The convicts are said to have dug a hole through their cell wall using a sharp metallic object.

The Luweero acting district Police commander, Peter Checkroom, said the dilapidated cell had 34 prisoners 10 of whom escaped.

He said none of the fugitives had been apprehended by press time but the search was continuing.

Checkroom identified the fugitives as Muhammad Abdullah, 24, who had been remanded for indecent assault, Alex Bukenya,18, a suspected motorbike thief and Stephen Mwanje, a Special Police Constable was on remand for stealing cattle.

Also on the run are Paul Kimera, a suspected burglar, Edward Seremba, a suspected motorbike thief and Muhammad Nkoyoyo, a suspected defiler.

The others are John Asiimwe, 19, and Byakatonda, 30, both imprisoned for defilement and Titus Sennyonjo, a convicted thief who was serving a two-year sentence.

Gunfire rocked Butuntumula on the night of the escape as the prison wardens fired in the dark in in an attempt to deter the escapees who vanished into the bushes.

Checkroom said once the convicts are re-arrested, they will face an additional charge of escaping from lawful custody.

Lamekh Kigozi, the Police spokesperson for central region, said most of the suspects had been arrested this year and their escape was under investigation.
