MULTIPLEX, the managers of city street parking, has acquired automatic motor vehicle number plate recognition system that detects defaulting motorists.

The system is part of the modernisation of the city parking that will soon be expanded to suburbs like Mengo, Bugoloobi and Katwe.

Stephen Gagaya, the operations manager, explained over the weekend that the car number plate recognition system is loaded on the vehicle with an outside sensor that detects vehicles that have defaulted parking fees.

“The system is every morning fed with targeted vehicle number plates that have defaulted.
“We want to increase compliance of motorists towards paying parking fees,” said Gagaya.

He said the system had been developed using modern technology by KAPS, a Kenyan-based firm.

The company has also installed street parking meters to help motorists in the absence of staff guides.
