THE disciplinary committee of the Law Council has indefinitely banned a Kampala lawyer from practicing for assaulting a magistrate.

George William Alenyo, a senior partner of Alenyo Advocates, was found guilty of insulting and assaulting the then Gulu Chief Magistrate, Silver Cohens Okullo, on March 23, 2004, at Gulu Chief Magistrate Court.

Okullo died of natural causes early this year.

He also maliciously damaged his mobile phone.
The magistrate had invited the lawyer to his chambers to discuss an application in which he was counsel for the defence.

It was further reported that the magistrate had told the lawyer that he had wanted to hear and dispose of the application as soon as possible because there was bribery surrounding the matter.

“Apparently, the committee heard, the lawyer was not happy with the magistrate’s statement, resulting into a hot exchange of words that culminated into the assault,” the prosecution said.

“We agree with the prosecution’s submission that the gravity of the case is worse than Sessanga, a former lawyer’s case,” the committee said.

Sessanga was relied on while he was an advocate but he swore a false affidavit, which the High Court considered misconduct, in which he deserved to be struck off the roll of advocates, the committee added.

“It should be dealt with by completely striking off the respondent with effect from September 18, 2009,” the committee ruled.

Alenyo is already under suspension and is expected to pay sh500,000 as costs of the committee.

Elijah Wante chaired the committee, with members including Agaba Maguru, John Mary Mugisha and Robinah Gureme Rwakoojo. Joseph Epodoi and Aaron Motoka led the prosecution.
