Guma confesses
- Ibanda North legislator Guma Gumisiriza is very comfortable confessing publicly that he does not pay his electricity bills. He recently shocked MPs on the natural resources committee when he revealed that he had not paid his bills for almost a year. He was however quick to explain why he had not done so. “This monster UMEME has made it a point to give me a constant bill of sh300,000 for my upcountry home yet they do not take my meter readings,” he explained. He vowed not to pay until UMEME officials come to demand their money. Fortunately, no one has been to his home yet.

Sarcastic Okumu
- If you thought that being a committee chairperson is an easy task, you may have to think twice. Commissions and statutory enterprises chairperson Reagan Okumu knows that the seat is hot. He recently confessed that MPs are very selective in the particular committees they attend. More trouble comes if the committee is expecting certain organisations. He said: “I am surprised that the Cotton Development Organisation has attracted all these MPs. This shows that they have interest in your work.” He was addressing the CDO managing director, Jolly Sabune. Only four MPs were present and one of them was sound asleep!

Gutumoi’s solution
- Erute North MP Angiro Gutomoi is a tough man. He was recently bargaining for tougher penalties to be given to medical personnel who prescribe wrong drugs. To explain why such people should be punished, he told MPs that in Medical School, once a student fails a question in the exam, teachers deduct marks from the right answers scored. He said this was to stop doctors from gambling with life.

Serious Sabune
- The managing director of the Cotton Development Organisation, Jolly Sabune, is very serious with her work. She stunned MPs last week when she assured them that she would provide the information they had asked her for within a short period of time. She promised that she would work through the independence holiday to look for the documents. The excited MPs said she was truly patriotic. Way to go Sabune.
