A SENIOR army officer has been detained in connection with the theft of sh900m reportedly stolen from the home of Damian Akankwasa, the executive director of the National Forestry Authority.

Maj. Godfrey Kyomuhendo was arrested at the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) head office in Kampala on Thursday, sources disclosed. He is a brother to Akankwasa’s wife, Juliet Katusiime, a key suspect in the case filed at Kira Road Police Station.

Attached to the intelligence unit of the land forces, Kyomuhendo was summoned to CMI by the director for counter intelligence, only identified as Lt. Col. Isoke. After his arrest, he was taken to the Rapid Response Unit head office in Kireka.

RRU is a temporary holding unit for hard core criminals involved in crimes like armed robbery and murder, but suspects involved in less heinous crimes are held there on request.

According to Akankwasa, Kyomuhendo connived with his sister to steal the money in August. The money was reportedly in the bedroom at the couple’s home in Naguru, a city suburb.

But Kyomuhendo told Saturday Vision he had nothing to do with the theft of the money, whose source remains a mystery.
RRU boss, Emmanuel Muhirwe, yesterday confirmed that Kyomuhendo had been arrested.

“I found him here when I came this morning,” he said on phone.
Akankwasa in an earlier interview said his wife could have shared the money with her brother and other people.

“There is a high possibility that he was part of this matter. We suspect that the money was shared by many people,” a Police investigator probing the case stated on condition of anonymity.
Kyomuhendo was expected to record a statement in connection with the incident. However, she had not done so by 11:00am.

Sebastian Orach, a lawyer who was to guide Kyomuhendo in the exercise, was advised to first consult with CID bosses at Kibuli, a Kampala suburb. In his company was Kyomuhendo’s wife, Miranda Bridget, who carried tea for her husband.

In a related development, city lawyer Bob Kasango yesterday applied for a court order to produce Katusiime in court or release her on bond.

This followed the failure to release his client despite a court order issued by the Buganda Road Court.

Citing the Police Act, Kasango argued that a suspect had to get Police bond within 24 hours if they have not appeared in court.
Juliet Katusiime has been in custody for over a week.
