MPs on the natural resources committee have urged the Government to blacklist OMEGA Construction. The MPs, led by Winfred Matsiko (NRM), accused the firm of delaying government projects.

“OMEGA is doing a disservice yet we are giving it a lot of money,” the Bukanga MP, Nathan Byanyima (NRM), said. The MPs were referring to the delayed construction of the sh4.2b Obwengyerero and Kagamba valley tanks in Isingiro district, which are being built by OMEGA.

They made the remarks last week while assessing water projects under construction in the district. Water state minister Jennifer Namuyangu said the construction was supposed to be completed in a year. “I am shocked with the contractor! He is disappointing. He was supposed to finish by April, but when I left this place in December last year, they had stopped working,” she said.

OMEGA was awarded the contract for the valley tanks on June 6, 2008. The minister noted that the delays were creating a bad image for the Government.

The Isingiro Woman MP, Grace Byarugaba, said the district is often affected by drought from February to October. She said the tanks may not resolve the water problem shortage because they would be completed when the rains are over.

The OMEGA project coordinator, Herbert Ndyomuhirwe, said the construction of the dams was delayed by heavy rains and land ownership issues.
