EDITOR—Now that Uganda is observing violent forest conflicts that are central to the trade in timber, there is need to address the issue of forest law enforcement, governance and trade. But without access to information all this will continue to be a myth.

Uganda being a signatory to the Rio Declaration Principle that articulates the need for citizens to have access to information, there is need for public participation in decision making. It is upon this justification that Uganda needs to publish a biennial State of Forest Report that will serve as a source of information to support policy and research related to forests.

It is only through such a report that issues of transparency around concessions, funding, certification and sale of timber will be highlighted.

EDITOR—I am scandalised by the report on Uganda’s forest reserves! Drastic action must be taken before it is too late. Corruption has acquired a new definition in Uganda!
