I leaked his sweet letters to improve his image

IT was back in S.3, when I met Jeremy at a French Club seminar between our schools. I admit, he was not the best looking guy of those who attended the seminar but he was the best French speaker.

I was so impressed with the way he spoke French that I deliberately set out to become friends with him. As it turned out, he was also intelligent. Apparently, he used to top his class.

By the end of the day, we had become an item. You know in school you do not drag your feet about things like that because you have only that outing to accept or reject a relationship.

When we went back to school, my friends mercilessly teased me about spending the whole day with one guy, moreover the guy they considered the ugliest of all those who turned up. Though I was hurt, I was not about to give up because I really liked him.

The following Monday, I got a letter from him and it just made me fall in love the more. It was so romantic. He did not write those common lines others wrote, like ‘how are you smoking the atmospheric cosmogony.’ His letters, which he wrote in simple English, read like lyrics of a real love song. I showed the first letter to one of my friends and she was really impressed. For days to come, she would pinch me in class and recite a line she recalled from the letter, before giggling with excitement. Her reaction gave me an idea. I was going to change how all my other friends viewed my pen-boyfriend by showing them his letters.

But, how could I show off his writing finesse without being obvious? I started ‘misplacing’ his letters in conspicuous places. Like, if a friend borrowed my book to copy notes, she would find a pretty writing pad leaf between the pages or I would accidentally drop it on the floor as I rushed out for break. Either way it would get seen, read and mass distributed.

Soon, my whole class knew that my boyfriend wrote the sweetest love letters ever and of course, they were envious. He was no longer known as the ugly guy but the most romantic one. At seminars, every girl wanted to talk to him. Our love flourished and was envied by everyone. We, however, broke up during S.4 vacation when I met a guy who was not only smart, but also somewhat better looking.
