NOKIA is to stage a competition where innovative mobile and web application developers can submit entries for local content

NOKIA is to stage a competition where innovative mobile and web application developers can submit entries for local content, writes David Mugabe.

The innovators will contest within the Ovi store applications found in Nokia phones like video, personal icons, games, audio and flash. The focus will be on internet innovation, flash, mobile games and social location. The Ovi is a customised Nokia mail.

Dubbed “Calling all innovators Africa competition,” the contest was initially opened in July for developers to create locally-relevant and best-of-breed mobile applications.

Submission of entries for the contest ends on November 15 and the winner will be announced on December 10.

In Uganda, it will be for local Ugandan content for anyone with bold ideas and remarkable talent.
“The most important criterion for submissions is the relevance to the African user,” explained Gerard Brandjes, general manager for Nokia East and Southern Africa in a statement.

“We encourage all developers to submit their applications as soon as possible as the closing date is only a few weeks away,” he said.
Nokia is reporting a huge volume of enquiries and interest shown in the competition, we are inviting African developers to submit entries.

“The designers of the best ideas for applications will be entered into a second stage of the contest where finalists will gain access to an environment and the tools to develop their ideas in practice,” explained Brandjes.

“This category of the competition really allows developers to be creative and to use their personal experience from using navigation tools to develop applications that will really add value to the user,” he explained.
