THE chief engineer at the works and transport ministry, who was charged with causing a financial loss of sh1.6b, has been remanded to Luzira Prison.

Samson Bagonza, who was charged in May at the Buganda Road Court, was yesterday sent on remand following the cancellation of his bail.

He is alleged to have caused the loss between 2007 and 2009 when he approved the payment of an additional sh1.6b to Energo Uganda Company for the rehabilitation of Entebbe highway in preparation for the Commonwealth summit in November 2007.

Buganda Road Court Magistrate John Wekesa cancelled Bagonza’s bail and committed him to Anti-Corruption Court for trial after the principal state attorney, James Odumbi, said the inquiries were complete.

Bagoza, who denied the charges, was advised to apply for bail in the Anti-Corruption Court.

The trial date is yet to be fixed by the court. He becomes the first Government official to be charged over the CHOGM activities.

The prosecution stated that Bagonza abused his office in 2007 during the rehabilitation of the Zana- Entebbe highway when he approved the additional payment without approval from the procurement body, PPDA.

The prosecution added that Bagonza knew his action would cause loss to the Government but nevertheless went ahead.

Under the Penal Code, any person found guilty of causing financial loss and abuse of office risks up to 14 years in jail.

Bagonza’s lawyer, Barnabas Musinguzi, asked the prosecution to give him the relevant documents to enable him prepare for the trial.
