THE Democratic Party boss, Ssebaana Kizito and the Kampala Mayor, Nasser Ssebagaala have decided to join the Ssembabule race to reinforce the party candidate, Irene Nantongo.

Speaking at a rally at Kasambya in Mateete sub-county, Sembabule on Wednesday, Nantongo said Ssebaana, Ssebagaala and the party secretary Mathias Nsubuga confirmed they would pitch camp in the district with effect from January 2.

Nantongo said other DP delegates expected include, the party publicist, Betty Nambooze, Kampala Central MP, Erias Lukwago, Mukasa Mbidde and Kyadondo South MP Issa Kikungwe.
Nantongo said President Museveni’s failure to unite the NRM camps has favoured her.

The independent candidate, Joy Kabatsi who says she belongs to NRM, refused to pull out of the race as asked by President Museveni. Museveni had advised her to support Hanifa Kawoya.

Nantongo who was accompanied by the Ssembabule DP chairperson, Gatrude Kiwanya said she has received many supporters. “Iam overwhelmed by the number of supporters from Kabatsi’s camp,” she said.

Meanwhile, the NRM camp has resorted to moving to people’s homes to solicit votes.

The foot campaign was launched by the Sembabule NRM chairman, Sam Kutesa after meeting campaigners at Rainball Motel in Sembabule.

The Local Government State Minister, Hope Mwesigye, who is the National NRM campaign Vice Chairperson for the by-election, said they have embarked on moving from house to house.

“We have received a lot of backing from President Museveni rallies. We are now moving on foot while other fellow campaigns are restricting themselves to rallies, Kawoya must win,” she said. She predicted Kawoya would win with 70%. The election polling day is slated for January 7.

The Supreme Court nullified the election of Kawoya on grounds that the Electoral Commission did not conduct the elections in accordance with the law.
