BRIAN Umony was the goal hero yesterday as the Uganda Cranes beat Harambee Stars of Kenya 1-0 to snatch their 10th CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup title.

The national soccer team won the top prize of sh52m that will be shared among the 20 team players and coaches.

The closely-contested final at Mandela National Stadium Namboole was decided in the first half when Umony hammered home from close range after a goal-mouth melee.

The Kenyans had dictated the pace in the early minutes but faded after Uganda’s player-of-the-tournament Tonny Mawejje took control of the midfield.

It was the 68th international meeting between the two arch-rivals since they first met in a 1-1 Gossage Cup draw on May 1, 1926. Uganda has since won 28, drawn 22 and lost 18 games.
