THE Uganda Cycling Association has voted Sam Muwonge Mahabba of Shimano Cycling Club as new chairman. This was during an assembly over the weekend at Lugogo. Muwonge replaces Haji Bruhan Sekibenga who declined to seek re-election.

Muwonge, who was chairman from 1992-2001, and ousted by National Council of Sports bounced back with majority support.

Muwonge got 20 votes, beating Yusufu Mbaziira of Lympda Club (16) and Saka Bukenya of Kyanja (2).

Robert Kiwendo, Richard Seninde and Fred Maiso were voted unopposed as vice chairman, secretary and assistant secretary respectively.

Muwonge thanked the assembly for voting him in office and called on members to work together as a team if cycling is to develop in the country.

“I have experience in cycling, but unity is the vital tool for development. You have voted me so we have to work together,” said Muwonge.

On his part, Sekibenga said that he declined to stand for another term because he was dealing with “too many traitors” in his executive.

“I had loved very much to lead cycling and I wanted another term but traitors in my executive forced me out,” he said.
He appealed to the ‘traitors’ not to sabotage the new chairman if the sport is to develop.

He reiterated his committment to the sport, adding that he will remain Buganda Cycling Committee boss.
