EDITOR—On the evening of January 10 at Wandegeya, a driver of Asian origin parked almost in the middle of the road and rushed to a nearby pharmacy, causing a terrible traffic jam.

A traffic officer, one Sgt. Kamugisha, came to our rescue. He went to the pharmacy and called the driver out. What was most interesting was how professionally he asked him to remove the car off the road at the peak of everyone’s anger!

He politely asked him for his driving permit and advised him to park off the road and continue his business at the pharmacy. He took time to lecture us about observing discipline on the roads. When the errant driver came to plead for his permit, he attempted to bribe the officer!

The sergeant simply asked him to apologise to the people he had inconvenienced and stop trying to evade the law. He was visibly irritated by the bribe attempt and asked him to report to the Police station.

We pleaded with him to forgive him and he accepted. What might have looked as a witchhunt to onlookers due to the race of the culprit turned out to be a learning session for us all. What a professional officer!
