By now you must have seen the glamorous pictures of Michelle Obama. Isn’t her figure to die for? How can a mother of two look so young and so good in clothes? Well, one of her secrets is exercise.

With a little discipline and a lot of determination you too can exercise to your dream figure and look as glamorous as Mrs Obama. And the icing on the cake is you do not need a gym to achieve this. You can exercise at home.

Jayne Mukisa, a fitness instructor at Get Fit Health Club in Kawempe, says: “The beauty in exercising at home is that you can fit it in your day’s programme. It could be after the baby has taken a nap, before you shower.”

But before you do this, Hussein Khalil a fitness instructor at the Hotel Africana health club says you need to consult a health professional before doing any exercise, especially if one has never exercised or when one has taken long wihout exercising. The doctor will recommend what exercises to do or to avoid.

Khalil adds: “It is important to warm up for five to eight minutes before any exercise.” Warm up exercises include stretching one’s arms while carrying dumbbells, jogging, skipping a rope, press ups and aerobic dancing depending on the exercises one intends to do.

One can then do physical exercises like sit ups, swimming, running, press ups, riding a bike, aerobic dancing to keep fit, shape and tone the body.

Khalil says regular exercises can also help prevent or treat serious ailments like high blood pressure, obesity, heart disease, diabetes, insomnia and depression. They are also important for maintaining physical fitness, building and maintaining healthy bones, strengthening one’s muscles and keeping a good figure.

Mukisa advises that since there are many distractions at home, one needs to stick to a schedule. “Choose exercises that are enjoyable. The logic is, if you look forward to your workout, you will not skip it,” he says.

He recommends aerobics, swimming, bike riding, abdominal, back and leg exercises for ladies. Exercise equipment one may use at home include treadmill, stationary bike, exercise ball, a roller for abdominal exercises, skipping rope and dumbbells for toning the arms. All these can be found at the sports’ centres around the city at affordable prices.

So there you have it, now go and get yourself that glamorous figure!
