PARLIAMENT is to set up a training institute, which will also act as an information centre, worth $500,000 (about sh975m), the clerk to Parliament has revealed.

Aeneas Tandekwire said: “We get delegates from different countries coming to Uganda to study things like the budget process, but all that information is lacking. This institute is necessary.”

He made the remarks while closing a three-day workshop for the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) clerks at Speke Resort Munyonyo on Wednesday.

Tandekwire said Parliament had acquired sponsors for the project in London, adding that they would be in the country next week.

He said the centre would also train clerks, which he said would save Parliament from depending on the CPA. The CPA is an association of clerks to parliaments in Commonwealth countries.

The director of information in the office of the Prime Minister, Kagole Kivumbi, appealed to government officials not to withhold information from journalists.

“The media in Uganda is hungry. They have to go back with more than two stories because each story caters for their lunch, supper and transport. Without stories, there is no food,” Kagole said.
