ALL boda boda stages on Kampala and Kitante Road are to be banned.
Other areas where boda boda will not be allowed to create stages include diplomats’ residences, banks and areas close to State House in Nakasero.

Citing bank robberies, Kampala deputy resident commissioner (RDC), Rose Kirabira, said thieves often rely on motorcycles parked nearby to take off after committing a crime.

Kirabira said new stages would be created in the central business district tomorrow.

“Operators in the affected places will be asked to join the new stages. If the number cannot be accommodated, the remainder will be asked to move out of the city centre,” she explained.

Kampala City Council, the Police, the RDC’s office and boda boda leaders will participate in the exercise in which authorities will also verify the operators’ documents.

Kampala extra traffic chief Lauben Mbamanya said the operators asked the Police to halt a recent crackdown on them until the end of the exercise.

The Police had earlier impounded hundreds of motorcycles whose riders were flouting traffic regulations.

Last year, the Police announced a move to to disband boda boda stages on Kampala Road, but never enforced it. Hundreds of boda bodas criss-cross the streets as they transport passengers.

The recklessness of some riders has ended in fatalities. Kirabira said boda boda leaders accepted the plan after consultations.

Saidi Kirumura, the operators’ leader, could not be reached for comment.
