A BRICKLAYER, who defiled a neighbour’s four-year-old child in Nakasongola district, has been sentenced to 12 years imprisonment by the Luweero High Court.

Tadewo Mayambala, a resident of Namalinda village in Kalongo sub-county, was sentenced after pleading guilty.
Prosecution, led by the district resident state attorney, Benard Senteza, told court that on September 25, 2006, when the mother of the victim was away, Mayambala dragged the child to a nearby bush and defiled her.

Senteza said the mother found the child crying in the bush and alerted the LCs.
Prosecution asked court for a deterrent punishment, saying defilement cases were common in the area and others needed to be deterred from committing the same crime.

Mayambala’s lawyer, Asaph Tubwine asked for leniency, saying his client was remorseful.

Defilement carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

The judge sentenced Mayambala to 12 years, saying the accused had been on remand for two years, which was a long period.

Mayambala, who said he committed the offence under the influence of marijuana, broke into tears when the sentence was read.
