LUWEERO Woman MP Rebecca Lukwago has advised residents to take advantage of the Kawempe-Kafu highway to boost food production and capture the booming market in Southern Sudan and Kampala.

She said the area had an edge over other food suppliers because of its strategic position on the highway.
The road was recently rehabilitated at a cost of sh14b.

“It would be a disappointment if Mbarara, which is hundreds of kilometres from Kampala, continues to dominate the food market,” she said.

Lukwago, who started a programme to rejuvenate matooke growing in the area, was distributing highyield banana suckers to Buganda chiefs.

She said Luweero used to be a food basket, but deteriorated, which led to widespread poverty.

“We need to have food in our homes if we are to restore Buganda’s past glory and reduce poverty among our people,” Lukwago advised.

She urged the beneficiaries to plant the suckers during the rainy season to realise good quality crops.
