Koreans perform heart surgeries

A TEAM of six medical experts from South Korea arrived at the Uganda Heart Institute at Mulago Hospital on Sunday to perform seven open-heart surgeries.

A TEAM of six medical experts from South Korea arrived at the Uganda Heart Institute at Mulago Hospital on Sunday to perform seven open-heart surgeries.

The team is led by Prof. PW Park and includes two cardiac surgeons, a perfusionist, anesthesiologist, intensivist and two nurses who will partner with a team of Ugandans from the heart institute.

The surgeries are sponsored by the Hwan Sung group of companies.

The company chairman, Sung Hwan Kim, introduced them to doctors at the heart institute where they made final preparations for the one-week surgeries that started on Monday.

The beneficiaries include Scovia Apili 17, Nelda Badaro 24, Evelyn Adikini 21, Denis Kalema 21, Judith Kobweni 23, Margaret Asimo 44 and Harriet Apolot 35.

The Mulago team is led by doctors Tom Mwambu, John Omagino and Michael Okech.

The first open-heart surgeries in Uganda were carried out in 2007 at the private International Hospital Kampala.

They were performed by a visting doctor, Clement Agyin.
