KCC FC v El Merreikh

IF the fist-fight involving KCC FC first team stars Robert Ssentongo and Patrick Ssenfuka yesterday was meant to prove something, then Sudan’s El Merreikh are in deep trouble.

Adrenalin seems high in the Kampala City Council Football Club camp, with players taking coach George Nsimbe’s call “to fight to the last minute” literally.

Ssentongo and Ssenfuka took it upon themselves to prove the sort of grit El Merreikh should expect by staging a stunning fight at training at Namboole. The two had argued about roles in a ball-work session.

They battled in a scene reminiscent of those in the English Premiership in 2006 when former Newcastle midfielder Lee Bowyer attacked teammate Kieron Dyer in the middle of a game against Aston Villa.

Ssentongo struggled at the start of the fight –– understandable because of his height difference with Ssenfuka ––– but rallied before they were separated.

“They despise each other. I know the problem, it has been ongoing but I have handled it before,” coach Nsimbe stated. He did not explain further.

In camp early this month, the two almost fought after another disagreement. Manager Hamid Juma said Ssentongo and Ssenfuka would not be reprimanded.

* MTN Uganda has
stepped in to mobilise Ugandans to support KCC’s bid to overcome El Merreikh tomorrow.

The partnership between MTN and KCC will see 200 fans win free tickets to attend the crunch match at Nakivubo. The tickets will be offered through local radio stations.

* FUFA boss Lawrence Mulindwa has challenged Uganda’s CAF Champions League representatives KCC FC to further demonstrate to the continent that ‘money can not buy success,’ when they face money-bags El Merreikh.

“You did us proud in South Africa. You proved that Ugandan football has improved. This country and not just KCC fans expect you to do the same on Friday. Give your best,” Mulindwa stated, before lifting the team’s spirits with a sh2m offer yesterday.
