THE European Union (EU) has given 600,000 euros (about sh1.7b) to eight districts in eastern Uganda. The funds will be used for activities in the third phase of the Farming in Tsetse Controlled Areas (FITCA) programme.

Annah Muja Rutebuka, an expert with FITCA, said the third phase that started in January and is expected to end in June next year, would focus on expanding the zero-grazing projects in the districts.

“A total of 360 heifers have already been distributed to local farmers in the districts during the first and second phase. “The challenge now is stepping up productivity among these farmers,” Rutebuka said.

She was recently briefing district chairpersons, veterinary officers and production secretaries at Mbale Resort Hotel. Rutebuka said the organisation had liaised with Send-a-Cow, a charity organisation, to train extension workers and educate farmers in modern livestock rearing.

The districts of Kamuli, Tororo, Bugiri, Iganga, Budaka, Busia, Mayuge and Manafwa are to benefit.
