FORUM for Democratic Change party president Kizza Besigye has launched a patriotism campaign aimed at creating a spirit of brotherhood and love among the youth.

“I am not launching this crusade for Nakawa Division alone. It is going to be a nationwide youth crusade tasked to empower youth with passion and zeal to defend their country in all aspects of life. You cannot teach patriotism when you are not patriotic,” he said at the launch at Naguru Community Centre in Nakawa on Saturday.

Besigye blamed the lag in the country’s development on the I-don’t-care attitude among Ugandans.

“Ugandans need to know that the prevailing situation affects all people irrespective of where they belong. People need to come up with one voice and fight the poor system (of governance),” he said.

Besigye’s launch comes after President Yoweri Museveni’s recent countrywide tour, sensitising secondary school teachers and students about patriotism. The President also called on teachers to establish patriotism clubs in schools.

Besigye urged the public to reject people who embezzle public funds.

“We want to fight that system that takes money from the majority and caters for a few individuals. The problem is that you are the people pushing this system forward by accepting small bribes instead of rejecting them,” he said.

On the proposal to develop the Naguru-Nakawa housing estates, Besigye urged the residents to defend their property from being allocated to developers.

He said only Ugandans can save their country from its current problems.
