Ex-militia chief arrested

LIRA-The Police have arrested a former Amuka militia commander for allegedly selling guns. Geoffrey Ojan, 27, was arrested on Monday after a resident disguised himself as a buyer and reported the matter to the Police. Sources said Ojan deserted the militia with an unknown number of guns. The district Police operations chief, David Abor, said they recovered an AK47 gun from Ojan’s home wrapped in a green polythene bag, which was inserted in a metallic box and buried in the ground. He added that it had 30 bullets. But Ojan claimed that another resident, Kasim Oling, gave him the gun for sale. Oling is still on the run.

Ecweru asks for sponsors

KAMPALA-The State Minister for Disaster Preparedness, Musa Ecweru, has urged donors to sponsor students from the north. Meeting the Danish minister for integration, Rikke Hvilshoj, at the Prime Minister’s office on Monday, Ecweru said: “Although we have universal primary and secondary education programmes, tertiary education remains untackled, especially for students from the north.” He said courses like medicine, nursing and commerce should be given priority if the region was to compete with the rest in development.

1,000 cases of violence

LIRA-The Police family protection unit has registered at least 1,146 cases of domestic violence from January to August. Christine Apio, the officer in-charge of the unit, on Tuesday attributed the increase to alcohol drinking by men, who return home late, quarrel and fight with their wives. She added that some women demand a lot of money from their husbands, which has escalated the problem. “I witnessed one woman who has no child demanding sh60,000 every week. Let’s appreciate the little we are given. Women should also learn to share responsibility with the family.” Apio noted that the cases were common among primary school teachers.
