THE Uganda Amateur Boxing Federation (UABF) has drafted stringent requirements for boxers in a bid to re-inforce the sport’s professional development.

According to the federation technical vice-president Stephen Aciga Fula, the new requirements will start with the National Youth Championships due September 29-October 5 at Lugogo, where UABF has staked three bicycles as top prizes.

This is the second time the federation is staking prizes. In January, UABF president Roger Ddungu offered a motorcycle that went to National Open champions Lukanga.

Pugilists to the youth championship will be required to not only belong to a club, but also acquire consent from parents/guardians before they are allowed to participate competitively.

Non-dependents will have to produce letters from their local councils to prove their eligibility.

“This will reduce cases where boxers climb the ring and later guardians blame the federation for not seeking their consent,” explained the federation’s secretary Sande Musoke.

Ronald Sserugo was withdrawn from the national squad training for the World Championship in Chicago, USA next month by a guardian. The guardian reportedly wants Sserugo to concentrate on his Industrial Fine Art course at Kyambogo University after he spent precious time at the All Africa Games in July.

UABF also wants to improve data collection. Boxers will be required to produce birth certificates or similar proof and their educational status, current or past.

Before weigh-ins, pugilists will also undergo a medical involving mental and physical fitness check-ups.

However, most clubs were displeased with the entry requirements set by the federation.

“This is not realistic considering the poor background of most boxers. It implies a club must have at least sh0.3m to enter a team,” complained one club official.
