UGANDAN professional golfers Deo Akope and Godfrey Mande will compete in the Golf World Cup qualifier in Malaysia next week.

Douglas Mazune reports that Akope and Mande, who leave for Malaysia today, will compete for slots at the World Cup that will take place in China later this year.
Every country is supposed to field only two players in the qualification tournament.

“It’s a big opportunity that we have to give a shot,” Akope remarked.
It is the first time that Uganda will be competing in the event since the Uganda Professional Golfers Association (UPGA) was formed in 2005.

The two players will fend for themselves.

Akope will bank on the exposure he got on Sunshine Tour in Southern African countries while it will be the first time Mande competes on the big stage.

UPGA boasts of nine professional players including Kenyan David Odhiambo and Rwanda Emmanuel Ruterana. Akope and Mande’s success in the qualifier will give them global exposure.
