THE Government has lashed out at non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that are involved in fraudulent operations.
Speaking at a workshop at Hotel Equatoria recently, the Minister of State for Youth and Children, Major (Rtd) James Kinobe, said: Some NGOs are demanding fees from families in order to pay for their children’s education yet poor children, who are supposed to benefit, continue suffering.”

He dismissed claims that the Government had not adequately supported orphans.
“Due to the vast problem of orphans and vulnerable children, the Government was working with NGOs. We have spent over sh4b and it is only proper that some of the NGOs receiving funds also mention the role of the Government instead of taking all the credit.”

Kinobe called upon Members of Parliament to address the problem of orphans.

“The orphan problem is huge. About 56% of Uganda’s population are children, with 1.8m orphans. 55.6% of the orphans are due to HIV/AIDS. Over 3m children are living in households below the poverty line, which makes them extremely vulnerable,” he said. The minister also urged stakeholders to support the orphans.
