Sempa gets HIV award

KAMPALA-Pastor Martin Ssempa’s has received a courageous leadership award for his efforts in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
The World Vision International and Willow Creek Association in the US rewarded Ssempa, a senior pastor of Makerere Community Church during a function at Makerere Hill recently. Richard Stearns, the president of World Vision commended Ssempa for promoting healthy relationships in the fight against the AIDS scourge. Ssempa urged the Government to fight homosexuality. “Silence is consent,” he said.


Eriyo joins UN bureau

KAMPALA-The state environment minister, Jessica Eriyo, has been elected bureau member to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. According to Dr. Gerald Sawula, who accompanied the minister to Canada, Eriyo was elected Rapporteur during a meeting for member-states of the protocol on September 19. Other members of the bureau are Khalid Al-Ali (Quatar) as president, Miroslav Spasojevic (Serbia), Nicholas Kiddle (New Zealand) and Mayra Meyra (Honduras) as vice-presidents. At the meeting, delegates from over 40 countries discussed the monitoring of trans-boundary movements and preventing illegal trade in ozone-depleting substances.


Namirembe to hold cultural day

KAMPALA-St. Paul’s Cathedral Namirembe will annually hold a cultural day on every Sunday proceeding the Independence Day.
On October 7, the congregation is expected to wear traditional clothes in preparation for the 45th Independence Day anniversary, the Rev. Kityo Luwalira, the Cathedral Vicar, said on Sunday. He urged Christians to pray for the people in the North who have been affected by the 20-year-long war and the floods.


Doctor held over forgery

KAMPALA-Hardly two weeks since Dr. Moses Muntukwonka was charged with obtaining money by false pretence, he is now accused of forgery. Muntukwonka on Friday denied the charges before the Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate, Margaret Tibulya.
